Moving out of a long-time Des Moines home almost always leaves good things behind: a dining set, a spare bed, kitchen cupboards full of dishes. Plenty of families in Central Iowa could use them.
Several nonprofits around the metro accept household donations, and some will send a truck for furniture, which saves the family a rental truck and a sore back.
Nonprofit donation programs accept furniture, household goods, clothing and in some cases appliances and building materials in usable condition. They give a written receipt for tax purposes, and some schedule home pickups for larger items. Each organization sets its own list of what it can take.
Each organization on this list was confirmed as an active nonprofit or charity-run program with a real donation drop-off or pickup service in the Des Moines area, not a for-profit resale operation or an unattended drop box.
A “Verified” badge means a listing passed a later manual check by our staff, either on request or as part of a Premium upgrade. Being listed here is free for any qualifying business; Premium is an optional upgrade for more visibility, not a requirement to appear.
Two to three weeks if you can. Pickup slots go quickly at the end of the month, when leases turn over, and during the spring and summer moving season.
Mattresses and box springs, cribs, stained or torn upholstery, older tube TVs and appliances that don’t work are commonly refused.
Some do, the ReStore in particular, if the appliance is clean, working and not too old. Many charities turn down older refrigerators and freezers, so call before you haul one out of the basement.
Papers, photos, prescriptions, keys and anything with account numbers on it. Check drawers, coat pockets and the backs of closets before the truck arrives.
Often, yes. Book the charity pickup first, then have a cleanout crew come later that day or the next morning to clear whatever is left.
